Unusual Machines (NYSE: UMAC) is the parent company of Rotor Riot and Fat Shark—two of the most respected and recognizable brands in the FPV (First-Person View) drone industry. For years, we’ve led the FPV consumer market through a curated e-commerce model built on trust, performance, and close partnerships with the best manufacturers and pilots in the business.

We are growing, and hiring drone build technicians for our Rotor Riot build team in Orlando, Florida. In this role, you will be responsible for building, programming, and testing drones, as well as identifying opportunities to improve the efficiency of the build process and the quality of our products. The ideal candidate will have prior experience building drones, soldering, and using Betaflight.

This is a dynamic and ever-changing environment, so flexibility and adaptability are essential. All of our builders play a critical role in maintaining the level of quality our customers have come to expect while continuously pushing us to improve with every build.

Key Responsibilities

  • Soldering electronics and assembling drone components with precision.
  • Building drones from the ground up, ensuring all parts are installed and functioning correctly.
  • Programming drones using Betaflight or similar flight controller software to optimize performance.
  • Maintaining an up-to-date knowledge of drone receiver and video systems to ensure compatibility and functionality.
  • Troubleshooting and repairing drones by diagnosing issues with components such as motors, ESCs, flight controllers, or FPV systems.
  • Testing and tuning drones, including conducting flight tests and adjusting PID settings to achieve optimal performance.
  • Customizing drone builds to meet specific performance requirements or customer needs, including frame selection, component upgrades, and aesthetic modifications.
  • Performing quality control checks to ensure all builds meet company standards and are ready for use.
  • Collaborating with team members, including designers and testers, to ensure smooth workflows and innovative solutions.
  • Managing inventory by tracking parts and components, ensuring the workshop is stocked with necessary supplies, and reporting shortages.

Requirements

  • Proven experience in soldering and working with small electronic components.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and repair drone components, including diagnosing and resolving technical issues.
  • Familiarity with tools and equipment such as soldering irons, multimeters, and other diagnostic tools.
  • Knowledge of drone assembly processes, including frame construction, wiring, and component installation.
  • Strong attention to detail to ensure high-quality builds and adherence to company standards.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and communicate effectively with colleagues.
  • Willingness to stay updated on the latest trends, technologies, and advancements in the FPV drone industry.
  • Basic understanding of inventory management and the ability to track and organize parts and components.
  • A passion for FPV drones and a commitment to delivering innovative and reliable builds.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience building and customizing FPV drones, either professionally or as a hobby.
  • Knowledge of FPV camera systems, including analog and digital systems like DJI, Walksnail, or HDZero.
  • Strong understanding of FPV drone systems, including flight controllers, ESCs, motors, receivers, and video transmission systems.
  • Proficiency in programming and configuring drones using Betaflight or similar flight controller software.
  • Experience tuning drones from blackbox logs
  • Understanding of radio protocols (e.g., Crossfire, ELRS, Ghost) and their integration with drone systems.
  • Experience with 3D printing or CAD software for designing custom drone parts or accessories.
  • Basic knowledge of LiPo battery safety, charging, and maintenance.
  • Familiarity with troubleshooting tools such as Blackbox logs or Betaflight Configurator for diagnosing flight issues.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to think creatively when addressing technical challenges.

Annual Base Salary: 55k to 60k
